3 concepts necessary for team retention

Gene Hammett’s article for Inc, 3 Core Principles You Need to Attract and Retain Top Talent, is worth a read for any leadership team. And bonus, in the article he shares thoughts from Mike Popowski, CEO of Atlanta-based Dagger.

Gene’s position is that the following three focus areas are the keys to employee retention:

  1. Create a compelling mission
  2. Give employees a place to grow
  3. Give your employees flexibility

At Dragon Army, I would say we are doing well with the first and third focus areas, and have work to do on the second.

Our Purpose – to Inspire Happiness – is woven throughout our organization and is something our team really rallies around. In fact, we have our annual Inspire Happiness Day coming up in Q4 to plan how we’re going to live our Purpose fully next year.

We could be better about opportunities for our team to grow through education, and it’s something we’re looking at right now while working on our 2019 budget. Our team members are able to work on new technology and problem-solving through the projects we work on, but we don’t do enough proactive training and education. Not yet.

In terms of flexibility, I would say this is also a strength of our organization. Our team members have a great amount of autonomy and are able to work remote whenever they need to. We have an unlimited vacation policy, but because that can result in people taking even less vacation, we also have a minimum number of vacation days a team member must take.

Keep the great articles coming, Gene!
