Effective altruism and the business of doing good
I had a chance to host another SandboxATL lunch this week, and the topic I chose was “The Business of Doing Good.” I wanted to talk to people to understand how much of a responsibility they feel to do good in the world given our individual privileges in life.
It was so great to hear different people’s views on this topic, and the conversation was excellent (we even ran over our time slot by a half hour). A few notes I thought I’d share:
The topic of Effective Altriusm was discussed, which is a term I had not heard before. It means using reason and logic to do the most good.

And lastly, one of the group members said that when he was younger and helping troubled youth in his neighborhood, he realized that “it would be harder for me to fail than it would be for this kid to succeed.” At that point he decided that he had a personal obligation to help those that are less fortunate. He started a company called Mark Labs that focuses on analyzing social impact.
