Alright Pinterest fans, let’s do this

My pins on Pinterest

I created my Pinterest board/page/site when it first launched, played with it a little, but never really got into it.  I do that a lot, try the new thing, don’t get it and move on. Especially for mobile apps where I employ a Second Screen Strategy.

Since trying Pinterest the first time, I’ve seen a lot of my friends start really embracing the site. I keep going back and not being sure how it would fit into my life. I feel like I have enough blogs and networks that I use to share content, but I’m nothing if not open to new things.

I do like the idea of being able to group things together in a visual way, so the concept seems like something I could get into. In fact that’s the idea of my Badassedness blog, where I collect things that I think are, of course, badass.

So I’m going to give Pinterest a solid two weeks to see if it sticks. This is a recipe I’ve prescribed to people for a long time when using new technology and something that I do when I’m at a decision point like this with something new. To me its long enough to really see if its going to stick. In fact, in February of 2009 I was telling people to give Twitter the two week trial.

Why there’s a chance it will remain a part of my routine:

  • If my friends keep using it then I’ll probably at least continue checking it for content
  • If it somehow can become a WordPress app, I’d happily make it a tab on this blog

Why I’m skeptical:

  • I’m not sure I can keep up with building lists or gathering items into groups. It seems like a once-in-a-while activity, but I could be wrong.
  • I’m not really looking for another way to discover new content. Quite frankly I have too many ways to find new content, or at least that’s my opinion at this point.

So here’s my Pinterest page so far. It’s a work in progress but I plan to attack it this week and see what sticks.

I hope Pinterest works for you.  I don’t use it to collect as much as “to find” when something pops into my head.  For example, we’re doing a large house renovation.  So when I see an idea for my new garage and my new mudroom, I store them on those boards on Pinterest.  Or, when I see stuff I want to buy for my husband, I put it on his board, RJW.  Or, yesterday I was looking for wall hooks for my daughter’s room — I searched Pinterest first.  The community aspect is secondary, but fun.  It is fun to see when someone starts “following” you or one of your boards.  For me, Pinterest is a semi-concrete way of organizing all the thoughts in my head!

    It’s an acquired taste.

I think you’ll like it :) I mean, 713 people following the Board of Man can’t be wrong…
    “See you” there!
