Sorry Steve, I’m not digging this new iPad2 case
I’m as surprised as anyone to feel this way, and truth be told I’m only about 9 hours in to having the iPad2 and 6 of those hours I was sleeping, but so far I’m not loving the new case.
It’s far clunkier than I thought it would be and not nearly as intuitive. I find it a little difficult sometimes to get in the right setting depending on how I want to prop it up. Not hard, mind you, I know how to use it, but my perception from videos/commercials I’ve seen was that it would be amazingly simple to use.
And I don’t like having it on the iPad when I’m holding it and using it, it sticks out too far on the unhinged side and feels like it might snap off. It also obviously won’t protect the back of the device. Actually it probably won’t protect much at all. Pretty sure if I drop this thing it will snap right off. But I’m not going to test that one.
Maybe I felt compelled to write this because I’m always such an Apple Fanboy that I need to show I’m actually more unbiased than you’d think when reviewing their products. Or maybe it’s because I’m a huge Case-Mate fan and want to see what they come up with. But mainly because I was really excited about this case and want to know if anyone else has had the same underwhelming experience.
Can i have your ipad 1? ;)
You are not wrong. The highly unattractive but useful Apple case for iPad 1 has saved my iPad on many occasions, including driving off with it on the car roof (it fell off at 30mph – not a scratch) and numerous drops and dribbles from kids aged 2 and 4 (mostly onto a stone floor).
My worry with the smart cover is the back and edges, when dropped, but do agree that it’s a great cover for the screen.
Not sure how case manufacturers will iterate the magnets into something that protects the device ‘in use’ (fine to keep it in a sleeve/case when not in use.
Either way, still 15days still we get delivery from Apple in the UK (ordered 10mins after launch) so will need to wait and see, and in that time, the ideal case may be released!

Jeff, I agree. The cover is awkward when I want to use the iPad in portrait mode. There doesn’t seem to be a good place to put it. It’s especially bad if I want to use it on a desk in portrait mode, as there is no good way to prop it up.
I’ve been considering getting a case, but I am concerned about adding extra bulk or taking away from the iPad’s beauty/simplicity. This one from Targus (https://bit.ly/i7eqBp) would solve my propping problem, but I think it would be too bulky.
I’d be interested in hearing what you end up getting.
Yeah, the case for the iPad 2 is just kinda…bleh. I’m sure there will be great ones coming, my money is on @casemate…
