Why I dont believe in luck anymore

I only recently realized this about myself, but I don’t believe in luck in business. Not anymore.

In the past, I’ve certainly talked about all the luck that’s involved in building a successful business. The lucky break, the good fortune, the happy accident, and so forth. But now, I think about it differently.

I view “luck” as your ability to take advantage of the good things that come your way.

Everyone has good and bad things come their way. In a ten-year span, I have the same good things sprout up in front of me as anyone else. Good things, and bad things. But I was able to take advantage of some of those things and then they were called, “luck.”

And its important to understand that its not just the things in your life that appear to be good. It could be something that you initially thought was negative, but you made the most of it and it turned out to be a lucky break.

Ultimately, you’ll find people that work harder and are more positive end up having more “luck”. I used to just feel like I was lucky. Now, not so much*.

What about you? Do you believe in “luck”?

* a quick caveat to this point, however. I absolutely think that I was fortunate to be born as the person I am and to the parents I had. These are not things that I could control, they just happened to me, and because of them I have advantages and privilege that most of the world can only dream of. This, truly, is lucky. Now, I could have thrown away my advantages, and instead (I hope) I took advantage of them and am using them as a force for good in the world…but I was still damn lucky when I was born.
