The most important job I have as CEO

A CEO’s job is incredibly complex. I think this is because there is no real playbook for the role. Depending on the size of the organization, the role can be incredibly strategic or incredibly tactical, and it can shift on a daily (or hourly) basis.

I’ve had the incredible opportunity to hear Steve Robinson (formerly the CMO of Chick-fil-A) speak on two occasions within the last week. He’s one of the most thoughtful and culture-driven leaders I’ve ever met.

He tells the story of when Truett Cathy hired him over 35 years ago, and the point that struck me the most was Truett’s comment about the most important thing they do at Chick-fil-A: bringing in the right people. And boy, does it show.

Without a doubt, I believe that is one of my most important responsibilities at Dragon Army. Probably THE most important. I always say that the CEO should set and clearly communicate the vision, put the right team in place to help achieve that vision, remove any barriers along the way (and get out of the way!), and continue to make sure the culture stays strong and true during the journey.

At Dragon Army, I’m always the last interview before a person is offered a position. And my main goal in that interview is to make sure that the candidate is going to fit in with, and thrive in, our culture. I want everyone that joins us to add a positive element to our company, and I want our company to be a positive force in their lives.
