My Five Truths

A few months back a few of my friends who have great blogs (this one and this one) wrote posts about their “five truths”. Then Drew challenged me and some others to write our five truths, so here we are.

My Five Truths:

Truth #1: I wanted to be a professional tennis player. From age 12 until age 21, that’s all I wanted. I went to college for one reason and one reason only: to play tennis. Sure I studied computer science and loved computers, but everything was secondary to tennis. And then the Internet happened and suddenly a new passion was born and I never looked back.

Truth #2: If given the choice, I’ll probably choose vanilla ice cream. In my book, nothing beats a good vanilla ice cream. Ice cream in general is my favorite. You could put the most amazing assortment of desserts in front of me at the best restaurant in town and I’ll probably ask the waiter, “What kind of ice cream do you have?” I’ve embarrassed my wife on more than one occasion by asking that question. And it usually goes like this:

Waiter: “Uh, yes, I think in the back we have some ice cream. But we only have vanilla.”

Me: “Great, I’ll have that. And some Hershey’s syrup if you have it. Bonus points for sprinkles.”

Wife: <groan>

Truth #3: I’m possibly the most competitive person you know. I want to win at everything I do, every time. Even if its playing beer pong at the office…I gotta win :) And if I don’t win, I’m going to go back and practice until I can win.

Truth #4: I want to climb one of the big mountains before I turn 50 (I’m 37 now). Everest or Kilimanjaro or one of the other big ones.  I just think that will be one of the most amazing accomplishments. Stories like this compel me.

Truth #5: I think my wife is the greatest person on the planet. It’s true. I’ve thought that since before we started dating when we were 16. She has so many gifts and she has the biggest heart of anyone I’ve ever met. And to watch our children become more like her every day is the greatest blessing of all. She’s even a great blogger for crying out loud.

Runner-up truths (Drew broke the seal on throwing in some runner-ups, so I stole the idea):

I’m a morning person. Always have been. I’d rather get up at 5:30am than stay up until 11:30pm. I’m most productive super early in the morning with a cup of coffee and…the silence :)

I prefer a cruise. Given the choice between pretty much any vacation, I’ll likely pick a cruise. This probably stems from taking my first company on cruises every year, but since then we’ve taken the kids on several Disney cruises and I just love the entire experience.

I almost always give a homeless person money. Or sometimes I try to give them something other than money. More so now after having gone through Leadership Atlanta, but I always did this when I could. I just figure the $5 or $10 in my pocket isn’t going to make a difference in my life but it could mean someone else can eat a meal that day. Even if sometimes I do it wrong.

So in the spirit of the five truths, I’ll challenge two friends that have new blogs to do their five truths – Donovan and Raj, let’s do this.

Update: Griz, consider yourself officially challenged!

Love it. It’s like a blogging chain letter. I’ll do it. Raj, you in?

Love your five truths – agree with #5 completely, she is pretty awesome. And vanilla ice cream is one of my favorites too – you can always add to it to dress it up, but it’s good by itself!

Thanks for jumping in! With a homeless person, I’ve found that just sitting and talking to them – even if for just 1-2 minutes, appears to make a big difference too. There’s a cool book on that subject called “Under the Overpass” worth checking out at some point. It’s a quick but interesting read.

Nice, I just downloaded a sample of that book to my Kindle app, thanks!
