Some mobile stats to get you started on a Monday morning..

I’m in the process of putting the finishing touches on a mobile presentation for a client lunch-n-learn later this week.  While building the presentation there’s of course a statistics section and I thought, what better way to start your week than to remind yourself why this year (or next year or maybe the year after that) is going to be the Year of Mobile.

These stats are from many different sources and because I still need to wrap this presentation up, I’m going to skip the links to the research so you’ll just have to trust me…

Worldwide over 350 billion text messages are exchanged every month.

About 2.4 billion mobile phones have been sold around the world last year, and globablly there are more mobile phones than PCs.

Americans spend nearly 3 hours online via their mobile devices each day

60% of U.S. mobile traffic is to social network sites, such as Facebook and Twitter.

And as expected, the US is pretty far behind in this race…

And doing cool mobile stuff isn’t just for the kids (though they do love texting while driving – jeesh)…

Hey look, another thing Facebook is dominating…

Another place that you will see mobile on the rise are in loyalty programs. Instead of having loyalty cards in their wallets, people will have mobile applications. Programs like Foursquare and even some of the mobile apps that Groupon is putting out are steps in this direction.

Agreed Drew, this is an area I've been looking at a lot lately. There are many apps popping up that seem to be moving into the loyalty space. Huge area of opportunity and growth. Thanks for the comment.
