Art challenges technology. Technology inspires art.

Recently I was reading about Pixar and they have a great philosophy on the importance of art and technology and how they should influence each other.  It goes like this:

Art challenges technology; technology inspires the art.

Art, or creative, should challenge technology.  Ideas should be dreamed up and technology should be challenged to find a way to make those dreams become reality.

Technology should continue to show what could be possible, to allow the artist to open their mind even further.  It’s like giving the artist a new color that they didn’t know existed before, that they can then add to their palate and begin creating something altogether new.

The real magic happens when art and technology have mutual respect.  When they crave input from the other.  When it becomes natural for the two to work together and collaborate.  When they both realize that without the other, they will never be able to reach their full potential.

So true. In a former life I dreamed of the invention of paper so I could write and draw freely. Then when paper became a reality, it inspired me to make a paper airplane.

And let me guess, now you’re using the Paper Airplane app on your iPad to throw virtual paper airplanes at fake substitute teachers for Facebook Credits.

This philosophy is genuine authentic and inspiring. It has been one of which daunt on me, and say without the art technology isn’t good; without technology the art isn’t good. They both depend upon each other.
