The iPad isn’t a mobile device, or is it? Zuckerburg says no.

Hm.  So back in April I wrote this post, “The iPad, is it really a mobile device?“, and I got into a nice debate with @kplanovsky.  And I’ve since spoken many times on the subject of mobile and I continue to think that the iPad, while it has its merits, isn’t a mobile device.

And apparently, Mark Zuckerburg seems to agree.

So, any chance of opening this debate up again?

In complete agreement with you, Jeff. I say this based on the ways people are using mobile phones and iPads in very different ways: Recent studies have shown that iPad users are accessing books, TV shows, movies and magazines – rather than what they’re commonly accessing on their iPhones. Also, iPad owners are willing and ready to pay for apps, while on mobile phones, they are typically seeking free versions. iPad owners also report spending significantly less time on the laptops, without decreasing time with mobile phones.

I don’t think an iPad is a “computer,” but it’s definitely not a mobile device as we know it.

I think someone else brought up the point but would like to hear your thoughts. What is a “mobile” device? I mean, if you are a really big dude then maybe an iPad is mobile.

It’s not really a mobile device, it’s a portable device. Subtle, yet there is a difference
